You can’t listen to Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty or Lou Reed without feeling its impact. And yet, in 1969, when bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones were playing stadiums with electric guitars, he got his band of violins and horns together to record this emotional song in his unique style that endures to this day. The news went everywhere…I was overwhelmed by it.”, This song incorporates so many important elements of R&B in the ‘60s—the call and response of “All you wanna do is ride around Sally” and “Ride, Sally, ride,” the 12-bar blues, and the brass funkiness. Just sayin’. In the Name of Love”, 19. No “Gimme Some Lovin'” by the Spencer Davis Group or “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf.". Pete Townshend would go on to create more complex music for The Who. While blues singers Irma Thomas and later Koko Taylor were howling “You Can Have My Husband (But Please Don’t Mess With My Man),” Lynn drew a line in the sand around her catting around lesser half Doolittle “Mooney” Lynn. 86. That is, the Byrds’ music has that sort of dependable self-energizing kineticism. Fifty years later, the chemistry between organist Booker T. It may have been a hard left turn away from the blues-based rock and pop the group was doing up to that point, but that doesn’t diminish the song’s power one iota. Try to listen to this song, even in our current cynical and overstretched times, and remain unmoved or unemotional. Lennon was obsessed with Procol Harum’s “A White Shade of Pale." Dusty Springfield, “Son of a Preacher Man”, 76. Sadly, Percy Sledge didn’t get the credit (or money) for writing one of the biggest R&B hits of all time. Released on Sly & The Family Stone’s “Greatest Hits” album at the end of the 1960s, “Thank You...” became a massive hit. Love is right when it’s simple, and it is in the simplicity of “Be My Baby” that makes it so ingenious. But, the Godfather of Soul’s performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1966 helped secure this song’s importance simply because of the fancy footwork he showcases here. Even among his rock and roll pioneering peers, Roy Orbison was unique. Supposedly when a very inebriated Sonny Bono and his former musical/romantic partner Cher went on Letterman back in 1987, they weren’t expecting to get shoved unceremoniously into the spotlight once more to sing their signature pop classic “I Got You, Babe.” Prearranged or not, the moment when they both gave in and gave a delightful performance of the song made for some great television. 34. Otis Redding – (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay. The part that pushes the song to its peak is Mary Clayton’s soaring backing vocals. She was thrilled. She sings, “You been making your brags about town/ That you been lovin’ my man/ But the man I love, when he picks up trash/ He puts it in a garbage can.”, Owning her man “ain’t” a “saint,” Lynn has no trouble suggesting to the brazen gal stay clear. The album also features Redding’s recording of the Sam & Dave hit “Knock On Wood,” which is also featured on this list. Ray Davies originally wrote the song on piano. If this list were simply about guitar playing, here’s your No. Here, the plea for reconciliation feels more agonized and terrified. “”Some things we fudged on slightly to make it rhyme, but the majority of it’s pretty accurate, I guess,” Haggard told NPR of the song in 2010. There aren’t too many genres of rock The Beatles didn’t influence. The electric guitar’s role in rock music would never be quite the same. Eric Burdon saw potential in it, adding it to The Animals’ repertoire in the early 1960s. His playing here is incendiary, mixed with distortion and bristling with electric power. “As tears subside, I find it all so amusing,” he sings, “To think I did all that.” ‘Ol Blue Eyes is looking back on everything, and though things may be coming to an end and he may not have made all the right choices, he—and anyone else listening—can be proud that they’ve done it their way. It remains one of the most blissful sounding songs in pop music history. From its lyrics (written by Booker T. Jones and William Bell) to King’s guitar playing, it’s the ultimate expression of self-deprecation backed by stunning guitar work that would influence numerous blues players that followed. Some, but not all, of the band's tracks were performed by studio musicians. My God, that opening snare. The Allman Brothers Band – “Whipping Post”. 10. Sledge wrote “When a Man Loves a Woman” with two members of the Esquires, Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright. A simple tune, not full of the vocal theatrics that he so often performed, it could easily start conversations about the Otis Redding that could have come. During The Supremes’ amazing run of No. Ike & Tina Turner, “River Deep – Mountain High”, 73. By itself, it’s no more than a melancholic mood piece, but then, after a sudden transition made from harsh glissandos, it changes into what sounds like a separate song—McCartney, churning out one of the light, gorgeous melodies he seemed to summon at will. “A Day in the Life” is the consummate example of how perfectly their collaboration could work when the elements mashed. In fact, the group’s greatest song started with a melody by guitarist Marv Taplin. Everybody look what’s going down…” The title of the song is perfect: “For What It’s Worth.” There is no bitterness, no dialectic…just description, and a word of unspoken advice: hold back from the battle—look around—we’ve already won the War. The mariachi horns are instantly recognizable, as is Cash’s idiosyncratic baritone. It also gave the world one of the catchiest love songs in the world that’s capable of turning a small group of people into a rousing choir once the chorus kicks in. But Curtis Mayfield’s songwriting was growing beyond that during the decade. Nearly everything the band produced at that time was stunning. The song was so complex, The Who wouldn’t perform it live for a long time, unable to replicate many of the sounds in a live format. Appropriately, their first single, “California Dreamin’,” is a paean to that state, and is still, for my money, the finest song they have recorded. The song, which was dressed up with over-distorted guitars, finger-flying note runs and radio-filtered hooks, brought a new focus to rock music by leaning on jazz and classical influence over the English love of blues music. As far as generation-defining songs go, it doesn’t get much better than this. But there’s not denying the fact that it’s a brilliant piece of country-pop music. But you can certainly here him striving for glory with the song’s over-the-top production. James Brown, “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, 16. And supposedly that television appearance wasn’t planned. 60. But the group moved into the spotlight with 1962′s hit record “Green Onions.” The flawless showcase of musicianship is widely considered one of greatest instrumental recordings of all time. Stevie Wonder – “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)”. Yet, there’s a distinct kind of beauty to “Sweet Thing,” a romantic tune that captures the feeling of being in love picture perfectly. As Bruce Springsteen said when he inducted Bob Dylan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it “sounded like somebody kicked open the door to your mind.” You have to understand that by 1965, Bob Dylan was already a celebrated artist and considered one of the great singer-songwriters of all time. Though still considered folk rock, “The Boxer” proved to be one of the more elaborate tracks of Simon & Garfunkel’s run, bringing in various instruments such as a steel guitar, strings, a harmonica and trumpet. Little Stevie Wonder, “Fingertips Part 2”, 92. While the song might seem simple by today’s pop standards, it was quite a shock to the system for a mainstream pop act to make orchestral sounds the centerpiece of a single. Simon & Garfunkel – “The Sound Of Silence”. Chet Atkins’ original “Walk, Don’t Run" is a finger-picking display. The fact that you are married only proves you’re my best friend.” Anyone who has ever been friend-zoned can relate to the aching sadness oozing from this track. 25. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” is a filthy masterpiece. Albert King – “Born Under a Bad Sign”. That Bowie makes it seem so seamless is a sign of his mastery. Somehow, I suppose somebody from the press was there and it got picked up. But when it comes to the Miracles, he wasn’t a one-man show. But her conviction gave the song much needed oomph. Thus, the sound of Simon & Garfunkel was born. 13th Floor Elevators, “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, 90. 2 hit for the group in 1967. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles – “The Tracks Of My Tears”. —Paste Archives, The Monkees didn’t form; the band was made – in this case for an American TV show inspired by The Beatles’ film A Hard Day’s Night. Louis Armstrong, “What a Wonderful World”, 72. What sometimes gets overlooked about the song’s wide-reaching appeal is how amazing Jimmy Cliff’s voice is. Released as a fairly basic, acoustic folk song on Simon & Garfunkel’s debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.,” the original version of “The Sound of Silence” was rather forgettable. (But don’t worry, you can just click here to find our best-of lists for some of those bands like The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Velvet Underground.) But Cooke’s didn’t like the final product. —Hilary Saunders. It’s the point where Davis went electric, embarking on his highly influential jazz-fusion phase. —Mark Lore, The Jimi Hendrix Experience never sounded better than they do on “Fire,” arguably the liveliest performance the trio ever put to tape. The Sixties mark the decade when rock and roll fully took shape as an art form. King spent just a few years with The Drifters, but the songs he said lead on were something special, including “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance For Me” and, of course, the early 1960 classic “This Magic Moment.”, 95. It gives you chills. In other words, it’s a perfect approximation of the rapid heartbeat and soaring emotions of someone in love. Right out the gate, Bowie had established himself as a one-of-a-kind artist. Simple Simon says, Put your hands on your head, Let your back bone stretch, Simon says, Simple simon says, Put your hands on your head, Let your back bone stiff, Simon says, Put your hands on your head, Simple Simon says, Bring them down by your side, Simple Simon says, Shake them to your left, Simple Simon Says, —Laura Stanley, The King of Soul was known at times as a gospel prodigy, a pop star, and a stirring soul singer, but with this song, he cemented his place as a voice in the Civil Rights Movement. —Hilary Saunders, Bob Dylan’s second album, Freewheelin’ came out in 1963 right at the beginning of his career. However, once producer Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground) got his hands on it, it took on new life. In the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” Mick Jagger is filmed listening to the isolated vocals of Clayton when she screams, “Rape, murder!” A smile comes over Jagger’s face. Not bad for a song reportedly written after Hendrix wanted to sit by a fireplace on a cold English day. The impact of this harmonic style, used effectively, is wondrous: “California Dreamin’” changes from a still image into a movie of emotion, tapping the listener on the shoulder and swirling him through the singers’ world. —Robert Ham, The 1965 single cut of “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” became a smash because of James Brown’s introduction of funk elements. Their first hit, "Simon Says", was panned by the band members, but Jeckell persuaded the band to record it. “I was probably the most incorrigible child you could ever meet. It’s those first few moments after a bad breakup or the beginnings of a long distance relationship with an uncertain future. Quite possibly the most iconic guitar riff in music history leads “You Really Got Me.” But it didn’t begin that way. “Astral Weeks” is such a masterful and cohesive album, it can be hard to separate any of its tracks. The Supremes – “Where Did Our Love Go”. A couple of sophomores from southern California high schools went to a party, and were impressed by a few similarly-aged fellows with… American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel recorded songs for five studio albums. Marty Balin and Grace Slick’s harmonization remains one of the first important guy/gal pairings that has influenced countless bands through the decades. It’s become a virtue. 1 in seven years when he released “Suspicious Minds.” But the song about a relationship falling apart changed that. “There’s something happening here; what it is ain’t exactly clear. —Kurt Suchman, “The Weight” remains The Band’s most well-known song to date, and who can complain with that? 1 hits for The Supremes. Music would never be the same. It’s like a car accident you can’t turn away from. Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Fortunate Son”. 90. “Whipping Post” would become landmark live recording from The Allman Brothers Band’s 1971 live album “At Fillmore East." It’s one of the few times Gordy was wrong. Ross reluctantly sang in a lower register at the direction of producers Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The song eventually made its way to Wilson, who delivers an amazing vocal performance backed by members of Motown’s The Funk Brothers, who were moonlighting with Brunswick Records to make some extra cash. The songs are similar. The 'old lover' referenced in the song has been interpreted to be either Simon's ex-wife Peggy Harper, from whom he was recently divorced, his former girlfriend from the 1960s Kathy Chitty, or even Art Garfunkel, who appears on the song that follows 'Still Crazy After All These Years" on the album. The band came together as Jeckell and The Hydes in New Jersey in 1965. With two dozen people voting for more than 500 songs, we whittled the list down to the top 100 hits of the ‘60s. “I Got You (I Feel Good)” is his highest-charting single, though, lead by Brown’s squeals, yelps, and shaking hips. Percy Sledge – “When a Man Loves a Woman”. But within the band’s own history, “Crimson and Clover” served as the turning point for more conceptual work. 20. Talk about breaking ground. “Space Oddity” certainly feels like two or three different parts of songs melded together. —Eric R. Danton, Considering the career he has had since, it’s wild to think that this song convinced Eric Clapton to leave The Yardbirds because their sound was getting too commercial in his eyes. But it never comes to rest. But “Cold Sweat” marked a turning point for soul music as a whole, abandoning the twelve bar blues chord progression for a one-chord bass line and that astonishing breakbeat. Bob Dylan had “All Along the Watchtower,” an amazing folk song from his “John Wesley Harding” album, to himself for all of about six months. Led Zeppelin – “Communication Breakdown”. —Matt Fink, Probably the song that Redding is still the most well-known for, “Sitting On A Dock Of The Bay” was co-written by legendary soul man Steve Cropper and recorded mere days before Redding’s death, released posthumously. Their catalog included their infamous, yet, most famous, f-bomb-dropping “Kick Out the Jams”—a hard-rocking tune that’s been covered by the likes of Rage Against the Machine and Pearl Jam. The fourth one is an electronic solo artist from Paris, France. The sultry song, released as a single that year, went on to become one of the Los Angeles band’s most recognizable and best-selling hits. Frankie Valli’s voice drove the song to No. —Tyler Kane, It wasn’t the first entry in the psychedelic rock canon, but by March of 1967 no song had gone quite so far in creating a nightmarish alternate universe as “Purple Haze.” Structurally simple yet harmonically complex, it was a plodding, bad trip anthem that turned the blues inside-out and invented heavy metal doom riffage in the process. But the prominence of the form undermines our knowing anything about all that. So it was with Eric Burdon of The Animals who heard this song first from a British folk singer and then brought it to his band who helped him turn it into a Hammond organ drenched hit that somehow felt both soothing and electrifying. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, “You Really Got A Hold on Me”, 30. Brian Wilson put the song together from various recording sessions, combining its unique parts into a pop masterpiece. Yet, The Zombies’ “She’s Not There” is an entirely different sonic beast that benefits greatly from Colin Blunstone’s stunning vocal performance. Mitch Mitchell’s drums go off like funky firecrackers. In Simon’s quick snapshot of 1960s New York City, he writes about the places he and Garfunkel frequent along with many other hopeful folk acts. Eric Clapton, a true bluesman at heart, hated the single’s pop tendencies and left the group. This time around, with the 1960s, we made things even harder, narrowing down the list to 100. The Miracles then recorded it a year later. The Beach Boys – “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. 65. Heavily inspired by the Texas blues that imbued her first musical endeavors, “Piece of My Heart” is a symbol of the time it was released; the perfect mix of blues and psychedelic hard rock to soundtrack the free-love ideology of the Hippie counterculture. The Mamas and the Papas sang backup on Barry McGuire’s original “California Dreamin.'" Desmond Dekker & The Aces, “Israelites”, 98. The song’s political awareness was mostly unheard of for that kind of gospel-influenced R&B record. — Bonnie Stiernberg, SNAP! Let the debate begin. It’s a storytelling slow-burner focused on one wild tale of love and murder. Noel Redding’s bass bobs and weaves around howling guitar leads. The Rolling Stones, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, 33. Including rock ‘n’ roll, itself. Though hailing from Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit, the song has been covered by everyone from The Beatles to The Carpenters to The Saturdays. Like in most of his work, Reed offers a harrowing tale without any overwhelming judgment. David Bowie’s first album wasn’t on the level of the masterpieces that would come after it. One of our favorite performances of this song actually came almost 20 years later, though, after divorce and solo careers. Who’s your daddy?” gives the song an added risqué allure. Add in a sharp guitar solo and you have one of the first masterpieces of the Stones’ golden album era that started with “Beggar’s Banquet.”, 64. Saying The Monkees were successful during 1966-1969 is a dramatic understatement, though. And you can hear that pain in his vocal performance. Not only did Franklin add the famous “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” and “Sock it to me!” parts. Booker T and the MG’s, “Green Onions”, 74. Martha and the Vandellas – “Dancing In the Street". That’s what the guy on the back of their second album _ Turn! The opening track to Miles Davis’ “In a Silent Way” marks a moment in jazz history. Sly & The Family Stone, “Everyday People”, 38. Written by future 10cc member Graham Gouldman, the song still works in the way that romantic movies still capture our attention. But the song was a classic right from its first recording on the band’s 1969 self-titled debut album. An archetypal “splatter platter,” “Leader of The Pack” was just one of many teenage tragedy sides the Shangri-Las would cut, making them something of icons in macabre sub-genre. —Max Blau, Up there with “Sweet Caroline” when it comes to most memorable horn licks of all time. Recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the backing musicians drive this one, most notably the electric piano. The song’s desperate night-time loneliness—“Cathy, I'm lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping / I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why”—is Mr Simon’s default setting. —Robert Ham, California, land of Ronald Reagan and P. F. Sloan, deserves the credit for latching on to these four wanderers long enough to record them and turn them into superstars. 52. 54. Of course, the star of “Be My Baby” is undoubtedly Ronnie Spector, who delivers a vocal for the ages. That version was never released. By the time MacLean completed it, though, Love was already working on their seminal 1967 record Forever Changes. What common word/phrase from 2020 do you predict will sound just as silly and quaint some day? 1 hit. Booker T. & the M.G.’s – “Green Onions”. —Max Blau, The Shangri-Las’ 1965 album Leader of the Pack never performed as well on the charts as the singles it spawned. The very concept of the song (“California dreamin’ on such a winter’s day”) is evocative; but it is the execution of the song that makes it a masterpiece. "Simon Says" is a song by Iranian-Swedish singer-songwriter Laleh from her third studio album, Me and Simon which was released as the lead single of the album on 12 January 2009. —Max Blau, Etta James was one of those rare singers who absolutely defied genre. “My Way” is both melancholic and uplifting, not afraid to confront emotion. 66. In 1968, “Fist City” was a revolution—a woman with no shame taking care of what’s hers. 9. Other timeless lyrics like, “And the people bowed and prayed / To the neon god they made” makes “The Sound of Silence” forever an important song in music’s history. Naturally, that was a recommendation flagrantly disregarded. But “Highway 61 Revisited” was a whole new level of genius. Van claimed he never saw a penny of royalties and the contract he naively signed rendered him liable for all expenses incurred during the recording process, which is probably a big reason why he doesn’t consider it one of his favorite songs from the catalog. —Holly Gleason, Stevie Wonder was just 12 years old when he recorded what would go on to become one of the first live songs to hit number one, making him the youngest person in history to top the Billboard Hot 100. It would be years before the band finally stepped out of their borderline-derivative blues-meets-rock fusion. Released in 1960, “Georgia on My Mind” became a career defining song for Charles and one that crossed racial, genre, political and social barriers. The game of life is hard to play I’m gonna lose it anyway The losing card I’ll someday lay So this is all I have to say. “Tomorrow Never Knows” marks one of the many times The Beatles changed music. The fact that “Ring of Fire” has become one of Johnny Cash’s biggest hits is ironic, considering the song was written by June Carter Cash (with Merle Kilgore) about June falling in love with Johnny. Before The Beatles arrived on the scene to make pop music much more complex, no one was better at cranking out massive hits than The Four Seasons. Nowadays, the kids tend to describe an awesome piece of music by saying it “slaps.” At the end of the 1960s nothing slapped harder than “Gimme Shelter.” It’s the coolest of the cool, a song that put the cherry on top of the decade, while prepping the rock world for what came next. Elvis hadn’t had a No. 93. The English rockers hit No. Radio stations fell in love with Gaye’s version of the song, so much so that Gordy finally agreed to rename Gaye’s album “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” to capitalize on the song’s massive success. —Patrick Filbin, “I hope I die before I get old.” In a generation full of spokespeople, Townshend may not have been quite as outspoken as his peers, but this simple phrase from “My Generation” continues to capture the essence of its time. Sam Cooke’s voice is considered one of the greatest in music history. Jimmy Page drew inspiration from singer-songwriter Jack Holme’s 1967 original also titled “Dazed and Confused,” reworking the track for the Yardbirds. The Beatles – “Strawberry Fields Forever". What grounds things is Tina Turner’s amazing vocal performance, making the track a n inventive hybrid of soul and pop that’s stood the test of time. When you think of the blues, Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign" is a nice place to start. The real story is that the song had been around for about a decade before The Righteous Brothers decided to record it for their 1967 album Just Once In My Life. The song proved to be a towering achievement of psychedelic rock at a time when the genre was taking off. —Beca Grimm, Other songs may be more influential or boast wittier lyrics, but none are as simply beautiful as “Waterloo Sunset.” The guitar part feels like a hug from an old friend, and the lyrics remind us that sometimes all you truly need is someone to walk along a bridge with. "Simon Says" soon became a chart-topping hit. Furthermore, the track introduces the arrival of John Entwistle as the undisputed king of his instrument and perhaps the most memorable stutter in all of rock history. The Best 1960s Music for Weddings to get people on the dance floor! He sings phrases like “Mystery tramp?” “Chrome horse with your diplomat?” “Napoleon in rags?” as if they were a new language, a secret code, masquerading as popular song. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Much of band’s masterful album “Something Else” tackles a lot of social and political issues going on in England at the time. The Stooges’ music felt like Iggy Pop’s personal version of the blues. While many of Bowie’s best are based around the gradual build or surprising the listener, this is by far the one that does it best. —Hilary Saunders, Girl-group perfection, this song took The Marvelettes to the top of the charts right out of the gate.
